Do you ever think about the science behind your skincare products?
Chemistry or biology has never been my thing. But after hearing about Veriphy skincare, science has my full attention. A new Canadian-made beauty brand spearheaded by a team of whip-smart and very badass women in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math), Veriphy is all about natural products backed by science.
I met two of the founders back in November of 2018, Alison Crumblehulme and Jessica Kizovski, and they explained the discovery of a material extracted from plants called phytoglycogen. Glycogen is a carbohydrate molecule that our bodies store (and use) as energy—this same process happens in our skin, too.
But the amount of glycogen we have in our skin decreases as we age. Oh, getting older is fun, right?
This is where Veriphy comes in. Phytoglycogen is a completely plant-based form of glycogen, called PhytoSpherix™, and when applied topically it is clinically proven to revitalize our skin and help it produce collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid.
For non-scientific gals like me, basically phytoglycogen boosts the energy of our cells for youthful, healthy skin.
Typically, glycogen is extracted from animal muscle or liver, but phytoglycogen is totally plant-based, natural and cruelty-free. Veriphy does zero animal testing at any stage of the product development. Plus, it’s manufactured and packaged right here in Canada.
If you’re vegan or conscious about animal cruelty...
The good thing is, more companies than ever before are not testing products on animals. At the heart of it, a brand that is cruelty-free cares about protecting animals from unnecessary harm. It’s not always the norm in the skincare world, but it’s awesome to see brands (especially in Canada!) like Veriphy paving the way. And they are Leaping Bunny certified!
Veriphy is making waves for women in STEM
Founded and run by women, Veriphy supports and advocates for the contributions of women in STEM. There is an underrepresentation of women in these fields—less than 14 percent of civil, mechanical, electrical and chemical engineers are women and only 23 percent of computer and information systems professionals are women. To help, Veriphy awards a bursary to a first-year female student through the University of Guelph, where PhytoSpherix™ was discovered.
Let’s break down the Veriphy collection
I’ve tried the Veriphy facial serum, moisturizer and eye cream for around three months, and I’m excited to share my results so far. Each product is fragrance-free (a must if you have sensitive skin) and super hydrating for dry skin like mine—especially needed in the colder months. They’re also good for all skin types, and are free of sulfates, parabens, mineral oil, phthalates and silicone.
1. Power Trip Facial Serum
I love a good serum. Veriphy’s Power Trip is an AHA serum (this British Vogue description is helpful if you are unsure what AHAs are!) with lactic acid and phytoglycogen that exfoliates the skin. After cleansing and toning, I’ll use this serum at night and let it absorb into my skin before using a moisturizer. The product is smooth and cooling with just a hint of a tingle, but a bit too sticky for my daytime routine.
Price: $105 CAD
2. Self Absorbed Facial Moisturizer
I actually love the scent of my skincare products, so getting used to a fragrance-free version from Veriphy took some time. But the Self Absorbed moisturizer doesn’t disappoint. It’s light and non-greasy, which is perfect for daytime use before sunscreen and makeup. I’ll periodically wear it at night too, if I’m wanting a moisturizer that absorbs into my skin faster (vs. a thicker night cream).
Price: $85 CAD
3. 20/20 Eye Cream
My favourite of the three? The 20/20 eye cream. It’s smooth and gentle, and I actually wake up with my dark circles looking lighter under my eyes (for real). This cream contains peptides to help with wrinkles, Vitamin B3 for brightening and cucumber for its wonderful soothing properties, along with the star ingredient: phytoglycogen.
