Give Your Skin a Hydration Boost with SkinCeuticals

Dry, sensitive skin. That’s been my skin dilemma for my entire life, along with hormonal breakouts. In my late teens and early twenties, I just accepted that fact and stuck to skincare products I was familiar with. I wasn’t very adventurous in trying new regimens at all, using a basic cleanser and moisturizer (sometimes only at night).

That basic routine worked… kind of.

If only I could tell my younger self that I didn’t have to deal with dry skin patches and t-zone issues all the time, or even some of the time. There were products out there tailored to exactly my skin type! What a new world.

Although my skin is much less temperamental now, as I get older the constant battle is locking in hydration without irritation, especially when the seasons change. Drops or spikes in temperature send my skin into panic mode.

So, when SkinCeuticals sent me a custom regimen for moisture and hydration just as winter ended and springtime started, I couldn’t wait to try it out.

Up close and personal with SkinCeuticals

SkinCeuticals is a brand born out of skin cancer research, which is something very close to my heart. They’ve been a sponsor of the Melanoma Research Alliance since 2010 with products that are safe to use post-procedure. Their mission? Scientifically advanced skincare.

They call their products cosmeceuticals, which are a blend of cosmetics and pharmaceuticals. SkinCeuticals fills in the gap between prescription-based products and over-the-counter cosmetics with proven formulas that truly enhance your skin.

Hello, sign me up!

Although SkinCeuticals products work on their own, they are designed to be used together for a customized regimen that depends on your skin concerns. The three main product categories are: prevent, correct and protect.

The Prevent line contains antioxidants to protect against damaging free radicals like UV exposure. The Correct products work on broader skin concerns like wrinkles, hydration and blemishes. And the Protect line includes broad spectrum UVA/UVB sunscreens to—you guessed it—protect your skin from sun exposure.

How to use the custom hydration regimen

It has been so easy to introduce the SkinCeuticals products into my routine. I use them all in the morning—first, the Soothing Cleanser Foam and a spritz of my toner. Then, I layer the H.A. Intensifier Serum and my moisturizer. Last, the Sheer Physical UV Defense sunscreen before applying my makeup.

1. SkinCeuticals Soothing Cleanser Foam

I’ve always been a creamy cleanser sort of gal, but the Soothing Cleanser Foam from SkinCeuticals is enough to convert me. A little goes a long way—in one pump, it turns into a dense soft foam (totally soap-free!) that’s perfect for cleansing your skin at the start of your day.

It contains a high concentration of botanicals like orchid extract to calm and restore your skin, as well as cucumber extract to nourish and hydrate. This cleanser is also completely safe and tested for post-procedure.

Results: The cleanser is super soothing and foams up immediately. The best part is that it doesn’t dry out my skin after it’s washed away, which is what usually happens with a foam cleanser. Not with this one. I’ve also had zero sensitivity to it or irritation, as it’s ultra-gentle on my skin.

2. SkinCeuticals H.A. Intensifer Serum

Serums have been my saving grace, and the H.A. Intensifer is an amazing addition to my routine—it’s been hyped about a lot in the beauty world and I totally see why! It’s part of the SkinCeuticals Correct line to help boost your skin’s hyaluronic acid levels. But it’s more than just that. It actually uses a three-part approach to boost, stimulate and lock in hydration.

If you’re not familiar hyaluronic acid (which I wasn’t until I started on my skincare journey), it is one of the most hydrating ingredients for our skin. It can hold 1,000 times its weight in water to give so much moisture without clogging up our pores. We actually have hyaluronic acid in our skin already, as our body produces it on its own.

Of course, as we age, our hyaluronic acid levels deplete. So, the H.A. Intensifier has 1.3% hyaluronic acid to add all that hydration goodness, but it also contains 10% proxylane that helps stimulate our body’s own production of hyaluronic acid. The serum finishes off the three-part approach with licorice root extract and purple rice extract that locks in all that hydration we’ve added and created.

“Hyaluronic acid is one of the most hydrating ingredients for our skin. It can hold 1,000 times its weight in water to give so much moisture without clogging up our pores.”

Results: My skin loves this purple bottle of magic. Almost immediately after it’s applied, my skin actually plumps up and feels ultra-hydrated. It’s a light serum and non-greasy, so it’s great for all skin types. I’ve noticed the biggest difference in my fine lines around my eyes and, of course, how moisturizing it is.

3. SkinCeuticals Sheer Physical UV Defense

Sunscreen: all day, every day. I can’t stress the importance enough of using a high SPF product on your face all the time! The Sheer Physical UV Defense is a broad-spectrum UVA/UVB sunscreen with SPF 50. It’s a transparent, mattifying fluid (paraben-free!) with 6% titanium dioxide that forms a barrier for your skin and 5% zinc oxide to protect against UVA/UVB rays. It also contains a plankton extract to boost your skin’s natural defence against the sun.

Results: I use the Sheer Physical UV Defense before applying my makeup, and it acts like a primer. It goes on matte with a brightening finish—even though the product is transparent, it still leaves a very light, white sheen. It is completely non-greasy on my skin and doesn’t cause any breakouts. Shake well before using, and apply before your foundation!

Price: $48 CAD
